Web evidence, source replay, and screenshots

For a web citation, the system records the source URL, title when available, exact quotation, claim, capture time, and a locator that can help recover the passage. A screenshot and replay record are attempted when the source permits them.

Replay is designed to reopen a source and find the cited passage in context. It can use text fragments or stored locator information; success still depends on the live page and browser behavior.

A source may block the capture browser, require authentication, time out, or render the relevant text only after unsupported interaction. CiteAnything distinguishes that outcome from successful quotation capture.

• Use the original source and quotation when they remain available.
• Do not describe a blocked screenshot as a successful visual archive.
• For high-stakes use, keep an independent archive or document copy when licensing permits.

The citation remains a record of what was captured, but the live page may no longer match it. Capture time, hashes, and available visual evidence help reviewers understand that difference; they do not guarantee permanent third-party hosting.
